Targeted Neck Muscles

Sternocleidomastoid (SCM): The SCM runs from the mastoid process behind the ear down to the sternum and collarbone. It helps rotate the head and tilt the chin, and protects structures like the carotid artery.

Deep Cervical Flexors: These muscles, including the longus capitis and longus colli, run along the front of the cervical spine, aiding in neck flexion and stabilization.

Scalene Muscles: Located on each side of the neck, they assist in flexion, lateral flexion, and rotation.

Suboccipitals: These muscles connect the upper cervical spine to the base of the skull, playing a key role in head extension and rotation.

Treating Neck Pain

Believe it or not, pain is beneficial. It’s one of your body’s warning systems, alerting you to a problem so that you can fix it before it gets worse.

*You should always consult a healthcare specialist or manual practitioner prior to undertaking new pain management options.

Pharmaceutical Drugs

OTC painkillers help with acute pain but aren't for long-term use. Prescription drugs like opioids and anti-inflammatories may be needed for severe pain, but they mainly treat symptoms, not the cause, and can lead to dependency with prolonged use.

Manual Therapy

Chiropractic, massage, osteopathy, and physiotherapy are non-invasive methods often recommended for musculoskeletal pain. Practitioners also suggest regular exercise for strength and to prevent future injuries and symptom recurrence.

Surgical Intervention

Surgery may be necessary for serious issues, but it's usually a last resort. Always discuss the risks with your doctor before proceeding. If possible, consider non-invasive, non-permanent alternatives.

Why it Works

When performed properly and regularly, the chin tuck aligns your cervical spine in order to target and strengthen the sternocleidomastoid, deep cervical flexors and lower cervical flexors, while stretching the scalene muscles along the front of the neck and suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull.

Because neck muscles support the cervical spine and contribute to the healthy movement of head, neck, upper back and shoulders, keeping them healthy and strong are critical to keeping you healthy and moving.
